Maple class information

We are a class of Year 5 and Year 6 children!

Our teacher is Mrs Holt and our teaching assistant is Mrs Chan.

We have PE on Mondays in Autumn 1

Homework is set every Wednesday on sumdog (maths) and edshed (english) and must be completed by the following Monday.

Topic Homework:

Autumn 2 - UKS2 half termly homework Aut 2 Cycle 2.pdf

We are encouraged to read at home as often as possible and are asked to ensure we read 4 times a week. Parents, each time your child reads to you or themselves, please sign in their purple book to confirm that they have read. We are rewarded with cushions for reading 4+ times a week!

Every Friday we look to see who has improved their rockstar status! Certificates are given out to those who have and dojos (house points) are awarded. Just play in the studio section on TT Rockstars whenever you want to keep trying to improve that rockstar status!

September update!

We are nearly at the end of our first month of the 25-26 academic year and we have done so much already! Our topic this half term has been focussed on the Anglo-Saxons and the children have enjoyed exploring artefacts and making anglo-saxon food! To complient this topic, our English has focussed upon legends and we have been reading the book 'Outlaw' and writing our own versions of the legend of Gelert. We have just begun our new English unit about Persuassion which begun with us looking at chocolate wrappers and eating it - much to the children's delight!

Autumn 1 update

We have now completed our first half term of the 25-26 academic year and have done so much since our first update! Our Anglo-Saxon topic has continued and we reinforced our learning about how Anglo-Saxon villages would be set up in our outdoor area. The children developed their shelter building skills when building the Anglo-Saxon homes then we used the natural resources in the area to represent the fields that Anglos-Saxons would grow their food, the animals they would keep outside their homes, the water source they would choose to live near and the clay pots they would keep outside their homes.  In DT, Maple class have enjoyed learning how to sew in order to create their own phone cases and sewing on trinkets to decorate them.

Our science learning has been all about evolution which has included how animals' bodies adapt to survive in their environment, natural selection and how certain variations in creatures can cause them to reproduce in numbers but other variations may become extinct and how creatures inherit genetic features from their parents and ancestors. This gave us the opportunity to create 'Floofs' (imaginary creatures) using marshmellows and sweets. Using the genetic make-up of our Floof parents, the children worked out what features their Floof baby would have and created the baby themselves....before eating it!!

Last but not least, our unit on persuassion that we had begun in our September update has now been completed with the children performing their own radio adverts to advertise the school. Since then we have done a poetry unit looking at the poem Jabberwocky. The children have worked together to make sense of all the made-up words to understand the poem then used fantastic voices, gestures and sound effects with musical instruments to perform the poem.
