welcome to birch class
Who we are
We are a mixed class of year 5 and Year 6 pupils. Our teachers are Mrs Morgan (Monday, Tuesday and Friday) and Mrs Thornley (Wednesday and Thursday).
Our teaching assistant is Mrs Seinen.
PE
Our PE days change each half-term which can be tricky to remember! It's easiest if you come to school in your active PE kit each day and then you will always have the correct uniform on. This half-term, we have indoor PE on a Tuesday and outdoor PE on a Wednesday.
Homework
Everyone is expected to read four times a week for at least 15 minutes. This can be aloud to an adult or can be completed silently. Either way, please write down the pages you have read in your reading diary and ask a grown-up to sign your diary. Each time your read you receive a reading dojo point and if you complete all of your reads then you get a massive extra 5 dojo points.
Spellings are set weekly on a Monday and tested on a Monday. Spelling homework is set on EdShed. You need to complete 4 spelling games. The most effective way to do this is by playing a game a day to help you learn and remember your new spellings words. We also practise these during our lessons. The games are set on a Wednesday and need to be completed by the following Monday.
Maths homework is set mainly on SumDog. This is set on a Wednesday and needs to be completed by the following Monday. As the year progresses, year 6 children will receive SATs style practice questions on either arithmetic or reasoning along with a short grammar revision paper.

Safer internet day 10th February
This morning we were visited by Nathan, from Vision, who continued his lessons on how to keep ourselves safe on line. We learnt about keeping important information safe and not sharing personal details either online or in person with people outside of our trusted circles. We played some fun games and took part in some serious and thought provoking discussions.
world mental health day
Birch enjoyed coming off timetable and spending the afternoon thinking about World Mental Health Day 2025 with the theme of Hello Yellow. We wore something yellow, created group happy doodles in yellow, listened to some uplifting music, took part in a treasure hunt around our school and spent some time connecting with nature carrying out a yellow themed scavenger hunt in the outdoor learning area. We all had a really enjoyable afternoon and reminded ourselves of the many ways in which we can take care of our mental health.
jabberwocky
We have spent this week exploring the poem 'Jabberwocky' by Lewis Carroll. Today we focused on performing the poem using our voices, our faces and our bodies. Here are some photos and videos of our performances. As you can see, we had lots of fun!

Mental health Week, Children in need and poetry party
Birch had a very busy week starting with wearing our odd socks to demonstrate our uniqueness; we then spent time thinking about the key messages of this year's antibullying week; learnt about interfaith week focusing on Buddhism; took part in a technology workshop; spent Thursday celebrating the work of the poet Michael Rosen and writing our own poems and finally on Friday took part in fund raising activities for Children in need. Phew! What a very busy week e had!

Number Day
On Friday 6th February, we enjoyed coming off timetable and taking part in a range of number related activities to raise money for the NSPCC. We created ciphers using algorithms, took part in a large scale practical version of Countdown, competed against our friends and other classes in a TTRockstars Battle and finished up the day working in teams in a class maths Blooket. We had lots of fun and loved playing around with numbers.
